CPC Training 28/11/19

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) training is a qualification that every Lorry, Coach and Bus driver must hold. This essential qualification offers standardization within the Logistics industry. It also reaffirms confidence that all drivers have a skill set that is continuously improving, due to the fact that the qualification needs to be renewed every 5 years.

Once you have completed a CPC qualification you will receive a card, this always needs to be kept on you, failure to present a valid CPC card can lead to on-the-spot fines.

New drivers will need to complete four modules including theory and practical tests to obtain a CPC qualification

  • Case studies with scenario-based questions.
  • Theory test – a standard test that all drivers need to complete before a license can be issued
  • Practical driving test – A test to assess driving ability that is required to obtain a license.
  • Practical driving test – A test where you will need to be able to demonstrate your skills in driving a lorry.

Renewing your CPC qualification will involve, 35 Hours of classroom-based training, delivered over 5 modules. The modules cover,

  • Tachographs
  • Safe and fuel-efficient driving
  • Legal requirements
  • Emergencies
  • Health & Safety

There is no pass or fail, due to the fact there are no exams. Not sure of the modules you have complete? you can check here: https://www.gov.uk/check-your-driver-cpc-periodic-training-hours

Research has shown that this mandatory qualification has made drivers better, drivers become more conscious of repercussions and understanding dangerous situations.

Not every professional driver will need a CPC card, there are some instances where the driver can be except;

  • If the vehicle being used for is classified as ‘Non-Commercial’ – not being used to generate a profit
  • If the vehicle is only used to carry equipment that you need to complete your work - this is only the case if the vehicle is not the main use of equipment for your role.
  • A non-professional driver who could be emptying lorries. There are certain conditions that need to be met in order to be exempt.
